FOUNDER AND PRINCIPAL
Mecca Billings has more than twenty years of experience in fundraising strategy and management. She began her fundraising career at her alma mater, Harvard, where she worked in the Harvard College Fund during its $2.1 billion university-wide campaign. Within the first two years of joining the Harvard College Fund team, she was promoted from an assistant, to a junior class officer and finally to a specially created position to manage a $25 million capital campaign project with a Kresge Foundation challenge grant, and identify new major donor alumni prospects living on the West Coast. Her extensive work for Harvard on the West Coast, coupled with a relentless Boston winter that ended with a snowstorm in April 1997, inspired her to relocate to the sunnier climate of California later that year.
In 2011, after 15 years working as an in-house fundraiser, she founded Billings Consulting Group, a full-service fundraising consulting firm that has a special focus on capital campaign and major gifts fundraising. Since its inception, her company has supported an eclectic group of nonprofit organizations focused on wildlife and the environment, the arts, youth and education, and documentary film. Her counsel has consistently increased the capacity of its clients to execute major fundraising campaigns and has also helped some of its clients secure six-figure and seven-figure gifts from individual donors and foundations.
She is the current board president of the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Company, former board president of Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco (founded in 1966 and one of the longest running professional flamenco dance companies outside of Spain), and an advisory board member of the Hawaii-based nonprofit Na Kama Kai, founded by world champion longboard surfer Duane DeSoto that teaches ocean safety and conservation to children and youth throughout the Hawaiian Islands. A lifelong student of dance and music, in 2007 she fell head over heels with the Spanish art flamenco which she practices and studies daily and performs occasionally.

Interim Director of Development Staffing
"I have known Mecca Billings since 2005. As Chairman of the Board of The Marine Mammal Center I had a hand in hiring her as Director of Development of TMMC. I felt we were taking a chance in this most important position in that her previous fundraising experience occurred in a mostly captive setting; for example, her target audience while working for Harvard were Harvard alumni. Nevertheless, she embraced the opportunity which became more of a challenge every day.
When Mecca joined TMMC we had just started a capital campaign to raise $16.5 million. Since $13 million was already in the bank, it did not seem to be too difficult a task to reach our goal. Unfortunately, the cost of raw materials needed for the project escalated so sharply that the final tally, which was reached, came to $33 million. We could never have achieved this without her leadership.
During the entire time we worked together, Mecca has demonstrated the ability to work hard and to enjoy favorable relationships with board members, staff, and influential donors. I could not recommend anyone more highly."
“Being a busy CEO who was relatively new to the Bay Area, I needed help in finding a new development director. Mecca screened our applicants thoroughly, provided us detailed written assessments on selected candidates and even provided input into our interview questions. She has a wealth of experience in philanthropy and a network in the development field--both provided us with special insights and support that we could not get with just relying on our recruitment ads. We found the right person, thanks to Mecca!”
